1947 Humber Sturmey Archer add

Pictured above is a scan of the add in the back of my 1947 Humber catalog, it shows the various types of Sturmey Archer hubs that were on offer in 1947. Many owners of new bikes , in this case 1947 Humber's would often upgrade to a Sturmey Archer hub which is what my father did by upgrading his Humber Sports with the ABC hub pictured above. I'm still using the original hub body although it has been rebuilt using a more modern 3 speed internal unit as the old internal gears were damaged and a larger cog has been fitted for pass storming.

Hello again: I never knew you could dismantle a Sturmey Archer system.

We'll be over in Jpn during August, staying mostly in Ise-shi. I was wondering what he most cost-effective way to get a bike for that time would be? I'm happy with 3 speeds while I'm there, just to keep me in shape for the riding I'll do back in Europe.

Hi Workbike

I doubt that you would be able to rent any Sturmey archer 3 speeds, but I'm sure if you do some net surfing you'll find someone who can rent you some MTBs or just borrow a standard Mama Chari to get around on, be warned it will be hot and humid but I'm sure you'll have a great time. Drink plenty of water flavored with malt & hops.

PS. Well done on dismantling the Sturmey Archer hub, taking it apart is easy it's the putting it back together that's harder !

Cheers Don
